Tension escalated along the busy Jogoo Road on Wednesday, July 9, after a large crowd marched through the road towards the Nairobi CBD.
According to reports, the mammoth is believed to consist of supporters of former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga.
Njega was scheduled for a hearing at the Makadara Law Courts, and the crowd, who marched along the road shouting 'Ndovu, Ndovu,' were believed to be accompanying the leader from the court hearing.
Earlier, a section of the group had gathered at the Makadara Law Courts for the mention of Njenga’s ongoing criminal case. After the hearing, they followed the court vehicles, which were allegedly transporting the leader.
According to the police officers, the supporters were peaceful, and no violence was reported. However, to ensure the situation remained calm, the Manyanja Road anti-riot police had been deployed.
The crowd brought tension among business owners along the road, especially after the recent Saba Saba protests left many of them counting losses following property looting.
"Be on the lookout; we don't want what happened on Saba Saba Day to repeat itself," Magunas, Jogoo Road branch supermarket supervisor, told the security in the presence of this writer.
The movement also brought transport to a standstill, with motorists being advised against using the road following the heavy traffic caused by the march.
''A large crowd is currently marching along Jogoo Road and has now reached the area near St. Stephen’s Church/Church Army, heading toward City Stadium. The group appears to be singing and moving in a coordinated manner,'' a concerned Kenyan said.
''They are from Makadara Law courts, where the case of Maina Njenga was being heard. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution around the area,'' the social media user continued.
The area remains under surveillance, and police are on the lookout for any further action that may spark.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto has instructed the police to act strictly against individuals who break the law during protests.
