The family of the former Prime Minister and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga has released an emotional message thanking Kenyans and world leaders who stood with them during his send-off, as they marked what would have been his birthday on January 7.

In an advertisement posted in the local dailies on January 7, 2026, the day Raila would have been celebrating his 81st birthday, the family said the day was both reflective and painful, coming weeks after the passing of the long-time political figure popularly known as Baba.

“The Odinga Family wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who stood with us during this profoundly painful time following the passing of our beloved Baba Rt Hon Raila Amolo Odinga,” the family stated.

They said marking his birthday offered an opportunity to acknowledge the support they received from across Kenya and beyond during the period of mourning and burial preparations.

The family singled out President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Chief Justice Martha Koome, and the entire government for what they described as outstanding support, understanding, and kindness.

They also thanked the various funeral committees involved in organising what they termed a proper and dignified send-off for the veteran opposition leader.

At the same time, the family sent a special appreciation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his personal involvement and the assistance of the Indian government in facilitating the swift repatriation of Odinga’s body.

At the time of his passing in India, the government of Modi gave Raila full military honours before his body was repatriated back to the country.

The family further acknowledged condolences and physical presence from former presidents Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, and Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank.

They noted that several heads of state and friends who were unable to attend the funeral still sent emissaries, saying the gesture meant a great deal to the family.

Additionally, the family also directed their appreciation to the diplomatic community, governors, and county assemblies, with special mention of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, and Siaya Governor James Orengo for ensuring smooth transit arrangements.

The family acknowledged the role played by Kenya Defence Forces Chief General Charles Muriu Kahariri, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, and members of both Houses of Parliament for coordinating events.

They further thanked the local and international media for what they termed dedicated and professional coverage of Odinga’s life and final journey, alongside appreciation for ODM Party members and staff who stood by him throughout his lifetime.

“Our special acknowledgement goes to the dedicated medical team led by Dr David Oluoch-Olunya, Dr Martin Wanyoike, Dr Eva Njenga, Dr. Robin Mogere, and Dr Abdul Msaddi,” the family said, also thanking medical staff in India and Kenya.

“We cherish all the messages of support, love, and kindness. It brings us peace to know how deeply Baba touched the lives of many, here and beyond.”
