Julius Karangi Spearheads Voter Registration Drive in Nyeri

Former Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Chief of Staff Julius Karangi on Monday convened a meeting with among other leaders, Kirinyaga gubernatorial aspirant Martha Karua.

The meeting, which was meant to mobilise voter registration in the County, was organised by a group dubbed Mt Kenya Foundation which is also supported by the government through the ICT Ministry.

The conference held at Greenhills Hotel in Nyeri, however, raised queries after most of the lawmakers from the region failed to attend despite calls by President Uhuru Kenyatta for area leaders to mobile residents to registers as voters.

Others equally questioned the purposes of the drive, why the former army man was tasked with spearheading the exercise and the presence of Karua in the forum.

The absence of the MPs reportedly sparked tension in the forum forcing Karangi to explain that their interest was in mobilising voters and not campaigning for any individuals.

He allayed fears of growing discord among leaders and aspirants who have been at loggerheads over the strategies being employed to conduct the mobilisation drive and how the money allocated for the exercise has being spent.

“Whatever gimmicks and tactics they use to pull out voters I leave that to them. What I am concerned about are the strategies,” he stated.

On her part Karua explained that she had been invited just like other people at the forum, affirming her willingness to work with other leaders.

“I was invited and I came in and am now on my way to Nyeri. There's nothing wrong with people working together,” she stated.

Apart from the Narc Kenya leader, the only lawmakers who were in attendance included Nyeri Women Representative Priscilla Nyokabi, MPs Kanini Kega (Kieni) and Ngung'u Githenji (Tetu).
