IEBC Fines Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka and Rival Wycliffe Wangamati for Bungoma Chaos

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has fined Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka and his rival Wycliffe Wangamati Sh1 Million each.

This is after the two were summoned by the IEBC Code of Conduct Committee on Wednesday for causing chaos in Bungoma County during campaigns.

The IEBC Committee stated that Lusaka and Wangamati would be disqualified from the 2017 race if they failed to pay the stated amount within 24 hours.

On June 3rd, Lusaka's supporters clashed with those of Wangamati during a rally in Bungoma town in an incident that left one person dead.

Both aspirants were whisked away by their security officers, with the incumbent proceeding to Posta Grounds while Wangamati headed out of town for his campaigns.

On Wednesday, IEBC grilled 14 candidates who are vying for various seats in the August polls over various electoral offences.

Among them was Steve Mbogo (ODM), Jessica Mbalu (Wiper) and Phillip Kaloki (Jubilee).

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati warned all aspirants taking part in the August 8 polls that the IEBC committee would continue to monitor the conduct of campaigns across the country, adding that those found guilty of electoral misconduct would face stern action.

Lusaka, who is seeking to defend his seat on a Jubilee Party ticket, will face off with Wangamati who is vying through the Ford-Kenya Party.
