Acting Interior CS Fred Matiang'i Declares August 8 Public Holiday

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has signed a Gazette notice declaring August 8 a public holiday in accordance with the law.

The CS stated that this would ensure that all Kenyans get a chance to vote.

The Constitution stipulates that: "The day in any year during which a general election is held following the dissolution of Parliament shall be a public holiday".

He, however, made it clear that August 9, will not be a holiday.

Speaking during a press conference on Wednesday evening, Matiang'i noted that all 290 returning officers and senior IEBC officials in counties will be given police protection.

Dr Matiang'i added that beginning tomorrow, his team will be giving the public brief updates on the state of security in the country.
