Maraga Named In Top 100 Most Influential Africans

Chief Justice David Maraga was named in the top 100 most influential Africans on Wednesday.

The Chief Justice was among other Africans who were honored by the New African Magazine when they revealed the 100 Most Influential Africans of 2017.

CJ Maraga was named under the politics and public service category for leading his team to make a historic ruling by nullifying the August 8 presidential election.

However, he was not the only Kenyan who made it to in the 100 Most Influential Africans of 2017.

Politician Sophia Abdi Noor, nutritionist, Africa Food Prize Winner professor Ruth Oniang’o, James Mworia – MD and CEO of Centum Investments, Patrick ‘PLO’ Lumumba – Defence lawyer and anti-corruption champ were also in the list.

Yvonne Mburu who is a co-founder of Med in Africa and former TV personality Julie Gichuru who is a public speaker and CEO of Arimus Media Limited were honored too.

In the athletics category, Elijah Manangoi who is the new 1500meters sensation, Hellen Obiri – the 5000m World Champion and Faith Kipyegon the double champion with big dreams were named in the coveted list.

The magazine stated that their criteria for naming the “influential” this year was a fairly simple one since it is applied to people whose work or activity had some transformative effect outside their main calling.

Additionally, the selected people’s work had to have an effect in results to change of perception or provide inspiration to others.

“Many in our selection have shattered the proverbial glass-ceilings or disability stigma and do so with great bravery, determination and personal sacrifice,” Anver Versi, the magazine’s Editor explained.

“Others yield economic power that impacts world markets,”Anver Versi added.
