Raila Dismisses Claims That Handshake Will Affect 2022 Politics

National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga on Friday dismissed claims that his unity pact with President Uhuru Kenyatta will affect 2022 politics as has been alleged by some Jubilee leaders.

Speaking during his meeting with the Gikuyu, Embu and Meru leaders in Nairobi, Odinga told them that his agreement with the Head of State is anchored on their desire to unite the Kenyan people.

Additionally, he refuted claims that his unity pact with Kenyatta is aimed at creating positions to benefit individuals.

The Opposition leader also defended his exclusion of the youth from the handshake team claiming that they needed experienced persons in the team.

"The old people were once young and young people have never been old," exclaimed Odinga.

However, he asserted that his team will need the help of the youth to achieve their agenda as they would play a crucial role in bringing communities together.

The former Prime Minister was briefing the group on his handshake agenda at the grassroots and urged Kenyans to avoid dragging the 2022 elections into the peace deal.

Speaking to journalists after meeting, GEMA Chairman Wilfred Kamanu noted: "We have agreed that very soon we shall get moving from ward to the constituency all the way up to the national level to bring our people together."

Mr Odinga was accompanied by Members of Parliament (MPs) Thomas Kanjwang (Ruaraka)and Jared Okelo (Nyando) during his meeting with the Mount Kenya leaders.

According to Mr Okelo, the peace initiative will start from Nairobi and be rolled out to other parts of the country.

"The gist of our meeting was to re-examine ourselves and see when the rain started beating us, “ declared the Nyando MP.
