3 Dams Burst Their Banks Submerging Village in Narok

Two people were reported dead and over 100 families displaced after three dams overflew submerging the entire village in Nairagie Enkare area in Narok East Sub-County.

Flood waters engulfed five churches, destroyed acres of maize, beans and banana plantation forcing the residents to flee their homes to safer grounds.

Residents living at a rental house in the now flooded area stated that they were counting losses as after they failed to salvage any of their belongings when the waters swallowed the plot.

House rent at the nearby Nairagie Enkare trading centre shot up from Ksh700 to Ksh 1, 500 for the single-roomed houses due to the high demand on the upper land.

The water pans which were constructed in 1930’s are reported to have had a similar overflow during the El-Nino rains in 1998 but has never flooded as witnessed in this season.

Elders in the area lauded the police for responding promptly and retrieving bodies of the two people who had drowned after the dams burst their banks.

They also called on the county government to supply drugs to health centres in the area as the stagnant water poses a great threat of waterborne diseases such as cholera to the locals.

Security teams cautioned residents living in areas prone to flooding to relocate to upper areas and area OCPD Joseph Kisombe confirmed that tens of people have perished this month due to drowning in different areas of the sub-county.

The government issued an alert last week urging people living in risky areas to move to safer grounds after the Solai Dam tragedy which claimed 48 lives in Nakuru.

The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) stated that the number of deaths resulting from the ongoing heavy rains has risen to slightly over 200.
