The Red Cross had earlier revealed that tens were missing but 39 people had been rescued.

The extremely heavy rains began at around 9 pm on Wednesday affecting at least 500 families.

Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui issued a press statement promising support for the affected residents and urged them to be cautious during this period of heavy rainfall.

"We assure residents that we will do our best to take affected families to safety and help them get medical attention," he wrote.

Kabazi MCA Peter Mbae appealed for support as he sought to explain how dire the situation was.

"Some people have serious injuries so they need urgent medical attention.

"Ambulances are needed ... thousands are out in the cold. The situation is dire," he stated.
