Interior PS Karanja Kibicho Claims Ksh600 Million Spent on Flood Victims

The government has spent Ksh 600 Million in feeding flood victims countrywide over the past two months, Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho reported on Wednesday.

Mr Kibicho added that part of the amount had also been used to purchase medication.

"The government has so far distributed food worth Ksh600 million and large quantities of essential medicine to prevent and/or contain the outbreak of water-borne diseases,” he stated.

The PS outlined that the amount would continue rising as rescue efforts continue and the rains persist.

Statistics shared by the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) indicate that 132 people have perished in the floods with 222,456 individuals already displaced from their homes.

According to KRCS projections, the figure is expected to rise to around 280,000 displaced individuals by May 14, based on rainfall projections in the flood-prone areas.

32 of the 47 counties have been affected by the floods with the Kenya Inter-Agency Rapid Assessment (KIRA) unit indicating that Tana River was worst hit.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party called on the government to declare the floods as a national disaster while asking those affected to move to higher ground for safety.

"As the ODM party, we commiserate with those who have been affected by the floods experienced in the country over the past few weeks.

"Lives have been lost and thousands have already been displaced from their homes and are in need of immediate humanitarian aid. We, therefore, as the government to declare the floods a national disaster," ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna stated.

The call has been backed by Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi in an article published in one of the local dailies on Wednesday.
