CS Matiang'i Gives Briefing Over Solai Dam Tragedy

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on Thursday visited Solai in Nakuru County following the death of over 35 people after the Patel dam bursts its bank causing flooding in the region.

Checking on the status of the rescue operation in the county, the CS assured that National Government was working closely with the County Government to assist the families affected.

"Let us focus on addressing the challenges being faced by affected families. It is not proper to speculate at this point about what happened.

"There is no confusion, no problem at all in coordinating disaster response. We did not lose time. County and national governments are working together," he assured.

Firstly, he told journalists that they were taking a roll call of all the residents to account for all lives.

Matiangi further assured that: "We are engaged in investigations to find out what happened, to find out if it could have been avoided."

Commenting on the situation, the interior CS assured that they had a multi-agency team going through the debris.

He stated the government would look at all the dams upstream, "to look at their structural ability."

Earlier reports indicated that 10 people had lost their lives following the flooding. However, as rescue operations kicked in more were found dead with the death toll rising to 35 by Thursday afternoon. 

Spokesperson Manoah Esipisu expressed sadness over the deaths but confirmed that CS Matiang'i was on the ground to monitor the situation.

"We are saddened by the loss of lives and property occasioned by the bursting of Patel dam in Solai, Subukia.

"First responders have been on the ground and we commend them for the work they are doing in the rescue efforts," he divulged on Thursday.
