Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to Rename Racecourse Road to Dr Geoffrey William Griffin Road

Nairobi County Governor has announced that he will rename Racecourse Road to Dr Geoffrey Griffin Road after the founder of Starehe Boys Centre during an event on Saturday.

“I wish to let you know that the Nairobi City County Government has passed a motion in the County Assembly to rename Racecourse Road to Dr Geoffrey William Griffin Road. This will be done with immediate effect,” Sonko stated.

He was speaking at Starehe Boys Centre 59th Founder’s Day celebration and he said the road would be renamed to Dr Geoffrey William Griffin Road.

He stated that the new name would be adopted immediately.

Sonko said the new name was to appreciate the founder of the school for his wisdom and ambition. He lauded the institution for the positive effects on the students.

The event was attended by British High Commissioner Nic Haley, Starehe Boys Centre director Josphat Mwaura. Member of Parliament (MP) for Saboti, Caleb Amisi was also in attendance.

Sonko gave a word of advice to students asking them to avoid rebellion especially in the wake of students unrest. He however also noted that it’s not fair for students prowess to be tested by a two-hour exam and talked of the need to invest in a student's full capability.

“The education system should use continuous assessment tests to grade students. Also, schools should look for the strength in every child and enhance it. If a student is strong in music, he should be encouraged to do music; if a student is strong in sciences, that is what should be promoted,” said the Governor.

The Nairobi governor also highlighted the progress that the county had made in terms of education, “We are the only county that now offers free Early Childhood Development Education, and each ECDE pupil receives Sh3,500. We recently launched full scholarships for 60,000 secondary school students. We are also investing heavily in our Technical and Vocational Training institutions.”
