Uhuru Makes Spontaneous Visit to LAPSSET Project in Lamu County

President Uhuru Kenyatta is reported to have embarked on a spontaneous tour of government projects in Lamu county and made urgent demands to contractors on their progress.

According to the Nation, the president was accompanied by Transport CS James Macharia, Chief of Defence Forces Samson Mwathethe and other top government officials when he toured the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor project in Kililana.

He inspected roads in the area that are meant to complement the project including the 15-kilometre Mokowe Urban Road constructed by the Kenya Urban Road Authority (Kura) and the 135-kilometre Lamu-Garsen road which is being built by H-Young company.

The publication reported that the president held a closed-door meeting with the contractors stressing the need for the projects to be completed as soon as possible.

"You can't have a project of that magnitude like the Lapsset and you don't have good roads to access it. We need that road to be constructed fast for easy access to the port," he demanded.

The Head of State gave a deadline of August which should not extend to beyond the end of the year.

On his part, CS Macharia gave an assurance that the construction of the roads would be completed in the set times.

Area MCA Anab Haji who met the president expressed her delight at Uhuru's intervention.

"We are very happy for the President's tour. We believe his visit is a new dawn for us. We are now confident that there will be a change in as far as government projects being done in our county are concerned.

"I think the delays that have been witnessed by some constructors will now end as from today," Ms Anab conveyed.
