Kenya Railways on Friday announced changes to be made to Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger trains in August.

For a limited period, five extra coaches will be added to morning trains travelling between Mombasa and Nairobi.

"Effective August 13, 2018,the Madaraka Express will have 5 coaches added to the morning trains from both Mombasa and Nairobi Terminus.

"The addition will run from the aforementioned date to August 16, 2018," a statement from the company read in part.

The move is aimed at increasing income from the passenger train services.

It had been announced in July that Kenya Railways was considering increasing coaches during weekends to capitalize on the increased demand.

Currently, the passenger trains have eleven coaches equating to 118 passengers on economy class tickets and two coaches (72 passengers) on first class tickets.

“We were studying travel trends and have noted demand is higher from Fridays,” Kenya Railways boss Atanas Maina stated in a recent interview.

Travellers can purchase economy class tickets on the KRC website for Ksh1,000 or Ksh3,000 for first-class.

The passenger service launched in June 2017 offers a four and a half  hour trip between two of Kenya's biggest cities.
