Esther Passaris Puts Mike Sonko On The Spot Over Deep Sea Slum Fire

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris on Saturday put Governor Mike Sonko on the spot over the county's response to a huge fire at Deep Sea slum in Nairobi.

Passaris questioned why fire engines were reportedly sent to the scene only to arrive without water.

"I am disappointed that city council fire engines were dispatched to Deep Sea slum with no water in their tanks," Passaris tweeted.

She further called on Sonko to ensure every constituency had a dedicated fire engine to serve it.

"Gov @MikeSonko, can we have a firetruck in every constituency for rapid response to emergencies? And while we're at it, let's ensure the trucks are well equipped," she added.

When launching 26 new fire-trucks in October 2017, the Governor made it clear that each of the 17 constituencies would be allocated a fire engine.

Gikomba market, which has faced frequent fires, was to be allocated two fire trucks.

"Today’s launch of fire trucks will put to rest concerns that the previous county government had failed to acquire firefighting equipment despite numerous tragedies," he stated at the time.

Smoke was seen billowing from Deep Sea early on Saturday morning.

Residents were the first to respond, struggling to contain the fire using water fetched in buckets and other containers.

They were dissapointed when the county truck arrived with inadequate water.
