Esther Passaris Blasts Netizens Over Question on 12 Dead Babies at Pumwani Hospital

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris came out to defend her office over concerns that she had taken a back seat as Governor Mike Sonko tackles matters concerning women.

On Monday, netizens pointed fingers at the city Woman Rep accusing her of leaving what should have been her battles in the hands of Governor Sonko.

In a reply to Senator Sakaja's reaction to the Sonko's impromptu visit to Pumwani, Passaris stated that she's off the blame, holding that the facility in question is run under the county government.

Passaris maintained that only the Senator and the governor would give much attention to the issues in hospitals categorised as Level 1 to five.

"Hospitals Level 1 to 5 are a devolved function under the County Government and the oversight function is with the Senate. At the National Assembly we oversight the Referral Hospitals," she responded to a Kenyan on Twitter for accusing her office of doing little about the matter.

She went on to note: "Having said that, I shall engage the Governor to look critically and honestly on the gaps in Universal Healthcare Coverage."

Senator Sakaja termed the details of Governor Sonko's expose on the hospital as saddening.

He appealed to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to prove infant deaths at Pumwani hospital and wanted detectives deployed to uncover allegations of child trafficking.

"The situation unearthed at Pumwani is saddening, heartbreaking and undeserving to any family. Spoken to DCI to investigate concerned parties on the deaths of the babies as well as allegations of child trafficking and baby swaps. May the Souls of the little Angels Rest In Peace," wrote Senator Sakaja on Twitter.

On Monday afternoon, the DCI sent a team of detectives to the hospital to probe the death of 12 infants whose bodies were discovered by Governor Sonko.

The team was led by Buruburu DCIO Jeremiah Ikiao in interrogating staff, management and mothers at the facility to establish allegations that the children died due to negligence by the medical staff.

Governor Sonko suspended some of the senior staff and doctors on Monday following complaints by mothers and the exposé of dead babies being withheld in cartons at the hospital.
