Rafiki Movie to Be Aired at Prestige Cinema From Sunday

Shortly after the High Court temporarily lifted the ban on the screening of the lesbian-themed film Rafiki, Kenyans were alerted that the film would be aired at the Prestige Cinema beginning Sunday, September 23, 2018.

On the movie's Twitter handle, a schedule was shared outlining that the first show would go on at 10 a.m.

Filmgoers will on Monday and Tuesday watch the movie at 1:15 p.m while on Wednesday and Thursday, the film will be played at 3:15 p. m.

The schedule will end on Friday and Saturday when the movie will be screened at 12:50 p. m.

Justice Wilfrida Okwany lifted the ban for a period of only seven days that will now allow the film to be nominated for an Oscar award.

"I am not convinced that Kenya is such a weak society that its moral foundation will be shaken by seeing such a film," the judge ruled.

Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) CEO Ezekiel Mutua took to Twitter shortly after the Friday ruling expressing his displeasure at the development.

"What pleasure, pray, does a person of a sane mind find in watching girls having sex with other girls?

"Shame on those foreign NGOs who want to use gay content as a tool for marketing the film industry in Kenya. Shindwe!

"If people want to screen the homosexual film in their houses that's fine. We are watching to see which public theatre will exhibit it without the Board's approval," Dr Mutua's posts on Twitter read.
