2 Kenyan Businessess Ranked in TIME Magazine World's 50 Genius Companies

Two Kenyan companies, BRCK and Ona have been ranked by TIME magazine among 2018 top 50 genius companies in the world

The basis for 2018's ranking was 'Businesses Inventing The Future.'

BRCK offers a modem that enables users in remote areas in Kenya to access fast Internet in the absence of fiber networks.

The device was designed with developing world conditions in mind - It is weatherproof, shockproof and battery powered.

It also has the capacity to provide internet at 3G speeds for to up to 100 devices at a time.

With a dual-core processor and five-terabyte hard drive, it works as a mini-server, streaming cached content such as textbooks and instructional videos to users without relying on expensive data connections.

Ona, another Kenyan company that made the list, uses satellite imagery and information from NGOs to create a simple digital mapping system.

It helps health workers locate remote places and identify what health services they need, in real time, in the field.

Only 3 African companies were recognised in 2018.

The third is a South-African based business called Agriprotein. It helps farmers grow a supply of flies that are used to feed fish and poultry as well.
