Multi-Billion Nairobi Commuter Rail Service to be Launched in December

Details have emerged on the development of the multi-billion Nairobi commuter rail service project known as Nairobi Railway City (NRC).

The government targets to transport 40,000 people daily across Nairobi with Dandora, Mwiki, Githurai, Kahawa, and Ruiru among new stations being built to complement the existing ones in Kibera, Imara Daima, Syokimau, and Makadara.

The stations are expected to be complete ahead of an official launch in December.

Several trains are also being refurbished in readiness for the initial rides.

The project will be complemented by the Nairobi Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) which earlier this week received Sh5 billion in support from the European Union (EU).

Transport CS James Macharia stated that focus would be on the Syokimau and Ruiru routes during the initial stages.

A total of ten new stations will be constructed.

"We are currently focusing on two main routes. The first one is the Syokimau to CBD and the second one is the Ruiru-CBD," he stated.

He, however, explained that the project was not a replacement for the BRT that still requires serious infrastructure development and acquisitions of high-capacity buses.

"We shall still be doing the BRT only that it is faster if we go the commuter trains way.

"We do not need any land and the tracks are already in place," he noted.
