Governor Mike Sonko Airlifts Congestina Achieng to Nairobi, Promises Employment

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has come to the aid of the former Boxing champion Congestina Achieng who is ailing back in her rural home, Siaya.

Sonko offered to airlift her to Nairobi for treatment after she appeared on a video that trended online earlier in the week.

The Governor also promised to take her to rehab and thereafter offer her employment.

Congestina, who is suffering from a mental health condition known as schizoaffective disorder/paranoid schizophrenia, appeared in the video looking distinctly unwell and with her previous glory and stature missing.

This pushed most netizens to appeal on her behalf stating that she had once carried Kenya’s flag high and mentored people who took up the sport.

@kimrickooh stated “She has made Kenya Proud severally... Let's not ignore serious things and deal with Rotten ones.”

Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris, however, blamed Congestina’s family for her current predicament with a new appeal to the state.

I hear you. Over the years we have fundraised to help Congestina out but her family members have been an obstacle. This is when State has to move in to protect the vulnerable from abuse and ridicule. @SuzannaOwiyo Can attest how engaged we been before. It's obvious we failed her.” she wrote on Twitter.

Congestina had been, back in 2012, admitted to Mathare Hospital after she slid into a psychotic episode for reportedly taking too many blows to the head.

Before her career came to a surprising halt, she had participated in 27 fights winning 17 of them and drawing in six.
