David Maraga Challenges Twalib Mbarak to Present Concrete Cases

Chief Justice David Maraga on Monday challenged the new CEO of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Twalib Mbarak, to present more watertight cases.

Speaking after presiding over the swearing-in ceremony of the ex-military intelligence officer, Maraga stated that the public was very keen on the unfolding events as far as fighting corruption was concerned.

He claimed that the masses could tell when cases were dismissed due to shoddy investigations.

More so, the CJ declared that the war on graft needed to be conducted within the framework of the Constitution and should adhere to the rule of law.

While dismissing those accusing him of laxity, he asserted that weak cases presented to the Judiciary would fail.

“We want to assure you that the Judiciary will continue to do its part but let me say we’ll not allow you to use the judiciary as the scapegoat. If you bring a hopeless case, we’ll say in our judgment why we’re dismissing it,” Maraga declared.

However, Attorney General Kihara Kariuki who had spoken before him challenged the Judiciary to step up its game in the ongoing anti-graft campaign.

The new CEO of the anti-graft agency promised to firmly deal with corruption, making financial crime a perilous endeavor.

“Corrupt persons thrive on volatility. They exploit it for personal gain and I am committed to make corruption a high-risk venture in this country. Kenya will be an inhospitable place for people who are corrupt,” Mbarak pledged.

The ceremony attended by among others EACC Chairperson Retired Anglican Archbishop Eliud Wabukala, Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji and his Criminal Investigations counterpart George Kinoti.

Mbarak was sworn-in to replace Halakhe Waqo whose six-year non-renewable term had come to an end having served since January 2013.
