Riverside Attack: CS Matiang'i Issues Statement

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, on Tuesday evening, issued a statement regarding the horror attack that occurred at Riverside Drive.

Addressing the media at Harambee House, the CS condemned the attack terming it a cowardly act by the 'suspected terrorists'.

"I condemn in the strongest terms the cowardly and heinous acts we witnessed in Nairobi today," he stated.

He gave a progress report on the rescue operations stating, "We have secured all the buildings affected in this event. We are now mopping up the area and securing evidence."

Dr Matiang'i further assured that the country was safe as the situation was under control.

"The country is now secure. Kenyans should feel free to continue with their duties. We have been tested and found not wanting. Terrorism will never defeat us. We will not surrender or bend," he stated.

He added that he had briefed President Uhuru Kenyatta on the situation adding that a team was working on coordinating the government's response.

He further stated, "I am pleased to report that the response on the ground was swift, determined and involved different security agencies."

Matiang'i further thanked the international community for their support in this period.

He, however, did not divulge confirm whether they regarded the incident as a terror attack nor did he give an official figure of the number of casualties.
