7 Ethiopians Arrested in Mombasa Over Human Traficking

Police, on Friday, arrested seven Ethiopians suspected to be part of a human trafficking ring headed to South Africa.

The seven were nabbed while in a hideout after arriving in a transit goods truck before disappearing into bushes at Mwamlai Forest.

They were arrested in Jomvu area of Changamwe, Mombasa, five hours after police launch manhunt.

The police were acting on a tip-off from members of the public who spotted the assailants alighting from the truck and immediately running into nearby bushes.

According to Changamwe Police boss Peter Omanwa, the officers are still searching for the truck's driver who vanished after discovering that a manhunt had been launched on all the other suspects.

The suspects were taken to Changamwe Police Station and are still waiting to be arraigned in court.

"We will take them to court once we finalise with investigations," stated Omanwa.

In early January 2019, Sports CS Rashid Echesa was dragged into a human trafficking ring that had risked him to be investigated by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The CS, however, rubbished the claims clarifying that his only role in the whole saga was that he had supported the Pakistani nationals to participate in an Indian Cultural Festival by issuing them with a Letter of No Objection.

The girls were, however, deported barely two days later amidst outrage from members of the public who criticised Echesa for his involvement.
