Police Arrest 17 Al-Shabaab Recruits in Samburu Safe House

Police on Sunday raided a safe house in Samburu township where 17 youths were allegedly hiding and recovered crucial documents.

The suspects, 15 men and two young women, were aged between 18 and 27 years.

A source disclosed to Kinango police in Kwale County that the youth were living a happy life, eating well and enjoying themselves.

According to the police, the suspects had been staying in the two-bedroomed house for the past two months waiting to be processed to join Al-Shabaab in Somalia.

Kinango police boss John Kemboi revealed that the youths were from Tana River, Baringo, Rongai in Nakuru, Mombasa, and Kilifi.

Upon interrogation, two of the suspects told police they had completed Form Four but could not proceed to university due to lack of fees. Others were Class Seven dropouts.

Kemboi stated that they were looking for the owner of the house, whom sources indicated had gone underground.

He further added that the suspects had been handed over to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU).

Elsewhere on Monday, A metal box caused quite a stir in Nairobi CBD after it was found abandoned at Odeon Cinema.

Members of the public around the area suspected that the box could have contained explosives and called the police who cordoned off the surroundings.

DCI officers later collected the unattended metallic box and normalcy was restored.
