Uhuru Picks Eliud Kinuthia to Replace Kavuludi as NPSC Chairman

President Uhuru Kenyatta has presented his nominee to replace outgoing National Police Service Commission (NPSC) Chairman Johnston Kavuludi to parliament for approval.

National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi confirmed on Tuesday that Eliud Kinuthia was awaiting approval from the house to take over the commission.

Others nominated as members of the commission include Lilian Kiamba, Eusebius Karuti Laibuta, Naftali Kipchirchir Rono, Alice Atieno Otwala and John Ole Moyaki.

“Honourable Members, section 6 (6) of the National Police Service Commission Act requires the National Assembly to either approve or reject the nominees to the respective positions within twenty one (21) days,” Muturi directed the MPs.

Muturi explained that the CVs of the nominees would be sent to the Departmental Committee on Administration and National Security for vetting.

Kavuludi announced his retirement in October 2018 together with deputy Mary Auma and commissioners Ronald Musengi and Murshid Mohammed.

During the farewell party, the former commission chairman narrated how he once encountered a threat on his life while in office.

In 2013, he recalled a freshly chopped head of a man was found in a box that had been dropped outside the commission's offices in Nairobi with the message "Kavuludi you are next."

“Not even the head that was covered with blood stopped me from fulfilling my mandate as the chairman of the commission. I vowed that I had to ensure that we bring reforms to the service and I believe I performed to my best,” he noted.

Also expected to leave office is Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet who will exit in March when his four-year term ends.
