A police officer, who was attached to Taveta Police Station, was arrested on Friday night after killing a man alleged to be his love rival.
Citizen TV reports that Corporal David Gitahi ended the life of Esau Juma Mwanguku by shooting him in the chest.
The incident occurred at Rockland nightclub in Taveta town at around 11:35 pm.
Corporal Gitahi met the deceased at the club and confronted him for trying to compete with a government officer.
A heated argument then ensued between the two men prompting the officer to draw his gun.
The officer reportedly fired a single bullet into Mwanguku's chest and killed him on the spot.
The incident was confirmed by Taveta Police Commander Lawrence Maroa who revealed that Corporal Gitahi had been issued with the firearm for his patrol duties.
Police suspect that both men were drunk during the confrontation.
The officer was taken to Taveta Police Station while the body of the deceased was taken to Taveta Sub-county Hospital’s mortuary.
