Chinese Ambassador Issues Warning After Meeting Ruto

Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Wu Peng, on Thursday, issued a warning to Chinese nationals in the country during a meeting with Deputy President William Ruto.

Speaking during the meeting, Peng noted with concern that their citizens were increasingly being involved in crime and indiscipline cases.

He declared that those found flouting the laws of the land would not only be punished by Kenya but also would face “our own internal measures as China”.

“Our citizens must respect the rule of law in Kenya. They should do the right thing and get permits and licenses where necessary,” he reiterated.

As an ambassador, Mr Peng explained, he would want to make Kenya-China relations flourish and assured the government of his country’s support and collaboration in development.

Echoing his sentiments, DP Ruto stated that Chinese nationals should not engage in small businesses which are done by locals.

“Kenya is run by the rule of law. We, therefore, expect the Chinese to adhere to them, and where there is lack of clarity, seek guidance from authorities,” added Ruto.

He further assured of mutual cooperation between the two countries based on the common development and transformation vision, which is anchored on the Strategic Comprehensive Cooperation Partnership agreement that was signed in 2016.

“This agreement has yielded positive results and has seen high-level exchanges between the two countries and cooperation in infrastructure, manpower development, research, ICT, among others,” he conveyed.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Chinese Ambassador explained why specific details contained in the SGR contract are still kept a secret.

While speaking to journalists during a Press Luncheon, the ambassador revealed that China could not disclose the details because of the country's commercial interest clause which was protected by the rule of law.

He further clarified that he did not know why the Kenyan government was yet to publish its details disclosing that he could only speak on behalf of China.
