Landmine Explodes on GSU Officers During Patrol

General Service Unit (GSU) officers narrowly escaped death on Saturday after a vehicle they were travelling in drove over a landmine in Rhamu, Mandera County.

The officers who were attached to Mandera Police Station were headed to Garreh Hill from Mandera town.

According to reports by Nairobi News, the incident involving the police vehicle of registration number GKB 521U occurred at around 10am on Saturday morning.

However, the officers escaped unharmed except for the rear cabin windscreen of the vehicle that was totally shattered to pieces.

On receiving the news of the ordeal, Rhamu Police Station officers sent reinforcement that responded immediately and conducted a security operation that was aimed at flushing out the suspected militants.

For a while now, Mandera county has been grappling with insecurity with the main target being security enforcement personnel.

Past attacks from rogue militants in the county have been linked to the county’s proximity to the Somali border.

Similarly, the radicalisation of jobless youths has also been listed as a factor in the rising spate of terrorist attacks, especially along the border counties of Mandera, Garissa, and Wajir.

Approximately one month ago, Al Shabaab militants raided a food store in Mandera town and made away with food, a firearm and ammunition belonging to a Kenya Police Reserve (KPR) officer. The officer was injured during the exchange of fire between the militants and local security agents.

During the start of the holy month of Ramadhan, state security agencies issued a terror alert on possible Al Shabaab attacks.
