Spectacle as Harambee Stars Land in Egypt for AFCON 2019

The Kenya National Football team, Harambee Stars, arrived in Cairo, to pomp and colour on Tuesday night.

Led by head coach, Sebastian Migne, the Kenyans made their way into Cairo in readiness for the 32nd edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2019 set to kick off on June 21, 2019.

Donned in khaki trousers, white shirts, navy blue blazers and their carrier bags in tow, the stars were already shining as soon they touched down at the Cairo International Airport.

Fans thronged the airport to get a glimpse of them as well as hundreds of selfies with national heroes such as Michael Olunga, Francis Kahata, Ayub Timbe, Joash Onyango and Victor Wanyama to name but a few.

It was quite easy to spot the Kenyan football fans who had already pitched camp at Egypt's capital in readiness for the eagerly anticipated tournament.

Despite carrying the hopes of an entire football-crazy nation, the players seemed to be in a relaxed and jovial mood as they took time to engage with the fans who had flooded the airport to ensure that they got a proper welcome.

Team Captain Wanyama, who has been battling with a niggling injury during his season with English side Tottenham Hotspurs, looked to be in a jovial mood as he seeks to drive his side to a memorable tournament.

The buoyant players had arrived from a 19-day residential camp in France where they were involved in two friendly matches, winning 1-0 against Madagascar and sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

This is the first time that the East African nation is geared up to take part in the continental tournament in 15 years.

Despite being thrown into the deep end of the pool in terms of being grouped against some of the continents most prolific forward players, the likes of Algeria's Riyad Mahrez and Senegal's Sadio Mane, the entire Kenyan nation remains nervously optimistic that the 'under-dog' tags could work in their favour.

Kenya's first match will be against Algeria on June 23. Tanzania will be up next on June 27, before Kenya winds up her group stage matches against Senegal on July 1, 2019.
