President Uhuru Kenyatta's influence in Africa is finally panning into view thanks to his latest project that is ranked as the biggest in Africa.
On Wednesday, Uhuru is set to commission Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) in Marsabit County which, according to African Development Bank (AfDB), is ranked as Africa's largest wind farm.
In a statement from State House, on Tuesday, Head of PSCU, Kanze Dena, noted that the realisation of the project proved the government's commitment towards exploiting all avenues of generating clean energy.
“Globally, Kenya is celebrated as one of the leading countries in the world with an energy mix dominated with renewable sources, especially from geothermal, a technology in which our country has become a continental centre of excellence.
"It is the biggest wind power in Africa that will generate 310 Megawatts at a low cost. It is part of the plan by the president to hit 100 percent of clean energy by next year,” stated Kanze.
Commenting about the controversial coal plant in Lamu, Dena explained that consultations were ongoing but failed to divulge further information.
“There have been consultations going on, that is why we are launching the wind power,” she continued.
LTWP has an installed capacity of 310MW of clean, reliable, low-cost energy and 365 wind turbines with a capacity of 850kW each.
"The project will benefit Kenya by providing clean and affordable energy that will reduce the overall energy cost to end consumers," read a statement from AfDB in 2015.
Two years after construction began, the power plant started feeding electricity to the national electricity grid when it was connected to the power transmission line to join the grid in Suswa, Narok County.
