Government Auctions Aircraft for as Low as Ksh 94K

The Kenyan government, on Tuesday, announced a public auction pertaining to 12 planes at Wilson Airport, Nairobi.

Despite being deemed as old and junk, the prices attached to each particular jet was well below the market value.

One particular plane that caught the eyes of Kenyans was the BE 55 BARON, registration code, 5Y-AUS, which was tagged at just Ksh 94,300.

The plane is a light, twin-engined piston aircraft developed by Beechcraft, able to ferry 1 crew member and 5 passengers when operating at full capacity.

It has a wingspan of approximately 11.5 metres, as well as a total length of 8 metres.

Netizens were quick to notice the extremely low prices, with several of them questioning the authenticity of the advertisement published under the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) insignia.

"Kwani ni ndege ama kuku (Are these chicken or planes)?" Joel Kenya posted.

However, KCAA clearly stated in the notice that the planes were junk, adding that July 24, 2019, up until August 8, 2019, had been set aside as the official viewing dates.

The most expensive of the lot is the De Havilland Canada DHC-7, popularly known as the Dash 7. It is a turboprop-powered regional airliner with a short take-off and landing (STOL) performance.

This particular model commanded a fee of Ksh 686,500, with two of these models available for purchase; 5Y-BMJ & 5Y-BPD.

August 9, 2019, was then communicated as the official auction date, with all willing and able buyers instructed to make their way to Wilson Airport.
