Renowned AIDS Researcher Dr Sobbie Mulindi Dies of Cancer

AIDs researcher and senior lecturer in UoN psychiatry department Dr Sobbie Mulindi has succumbed to cancer aged 70.

Dr Mulindi was a former Deputy Director of the National Aids Control Council (2008-2014) and a senior lecturer in the psychiatry department of the University of Nairobi.

Dr. Sobbie Z. A. Mulindi started his studies at the University of Nairobi, College of Biological Sciences and completed all his degrees in France. His highest attainment is PhD in Clinical Psychology, awarded with Distinction.

He boasted of 30-years teaching experience, with stream competencies in both academic teaching and clinical work at Kenyatta National Hospital and Mathari Mental Hospitals. 

His main research interests included mental health, behaviour and lifestyles, crisis and disaster management, capacity building and training in multi-disciplinary approach in health. He has been actively been involved in advocacy and social mobilization, design and development of strategies to prevent, control and mitigate impacts of HIV and AIDs for 30 years, reproductive health, road traffic accidents and drug abuse.

Dr Mulindi chaired several technical committees for the preparation of the Sessional Paper No. 4 on HIV and AIDS in Kenya 1997 and also wrote “HIV/AIDS Situation Analysis” for the Ministry of Health that facilitated the development of first Strategic Plan on HIV and AIDS. 

He has been involved in the development of subsequent Four National Strategic Plans for HIV/AIDS prevention in Kenya and other countries including South Africa, Swaziland, Rwanda, Benin, Somali, Congo and Brazzaville.

He was actively involved in “Operation Recovery” after the Bomb Blast in Nairobi August 7, 1998, Westgate 2013 and also headed Medical Counselling Teams to Abidjan Cote d’Ivoire 2000 and Duala Cameroon 2007 during the Kenya Airways Airbus and Boeing 737 Crush accidents. 

From time to time, he also acted as a Director coordinating all programmes of HIV and AIDS in Kenya to reduce prevalence from 14 percent to 5.6 percent currently.

In 2008, he was seconded and appointed to the National AIDS Control Council as Deputy Director Coordination and Support, Office of the President.

In 2013, Dr Mulindi was a team leader that formulated and launched the First Lady’s Towards Zero Campaign and assisted County First Lady’s to develop the support Towards Zero Campaign.
