2 Dead, Several Injured During Flash Floods [VIDEO]

A 13-year-old girl and unnamed woman lost their lives during flash floods in Wajir North on Tuesday, October 15.

According to reports by NTV, five others were injured during the heavy downpour.

In a chilling video shared by NTV, a motorbike carrying two passengers is seen to be swept away while on a bridge by a river that had broken its banks.  

Transport in Wajir North and South was paralysed as property of unknown value was destroyed during the floods.

The heavy rains also destroyed a newly constructed road in Mandera leaving residents with no alternative.

This came only one day after the Kenya Meteorological Department warned of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds.

The department gave special warnings to residents in Wajir as well as Kisumu, Siaya, Migori, Homa Bay, Busia, Nakuru, Narok, Laikipia, Baringo, Nyeri, Murang'a, Embu, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Nairobi.

Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, Lamu, Wajir, Garissa, Mandera, Machakos, Makueni and Taita Taveta, Western parts of Turkana, Nothern parts of Marsabit and Samburu were also cautioned to be on the lookout.

"Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential flash floods. Floods may suddenly appear even in places where it has not rained heavily and can be deeper and faster than they look.

"Locals are advised to avoid driving through, or walking in, moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes," the department warned.
