Mumbi Ngugi

Lady Justice Grace Mumbi Ngugi is a judge of the High Court of Kenya and co-founder of the Albinism Foundation for East Africa.

The foundation comprises people with albinism, parents of children with albinism and professional friends with an interest in the rights of persons living with albinism.  Aside from being a renowned author, she is also known for scooping a number of awards.

She was awarded the 2018 CB Madan Award in an annual ceremony organized by the Platform Magazine and Strathmore Law School.

In a year (2019) that has seen high-profile corruption prosecutions, Ngugi stands out in her tough rulings that paint an image of a jurist out to do more for the country than just her job.

She spelled doom for corrupt governors and public officers in her July 24 ruling, that instructed that elected executives could not continue holding office while at the same time facing corruption charges.

Later on October 1, Ngugi gave another boost to the fight against corruption after she ruled that investigators could conduct secret searches at the offices and homes of corruption suspects without prior notification.

Other awards Ngugi has received include; Brand Kenya Ambassador Award, 2013, for portraying resilience and rising to the high echelons of the judiciary, International Commission of jurists (ICJ- Kenya) Jurist of the year 2013 and a Rockefeller Bellagio Centre Practitioners Residency (2010) among other recognitions.
