Rare Bird Flies 7,000KM from Europe to Kenya

A rare bird covered 6,948 kilometres from Finland, Europe before arriving in Bondo, Siaya County.

One Walter Oloo of West Imbo location, Usalu village in Bondo spotted the bird on Monday, January 20 and alerted the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) team in Siaya.

The bird identified as the rare species Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), also known as sea hawk, river hawk or fish hawk was stuck in a fishing net and seemed to be injured.

KWS officers who attended to it revealed that the bird was found with some bruises on its leg and was dehydrated, but healthy.

The bird had also lost some weight.

A refereeing ring tagged to the bird's leg further confirmed that the bird had been ringed in Helsinki, Finland at Museum Zool.

Bird ringing is the practice of catching birds, marking them with an identifying tag around the leg and releasing them.

In their statement, KWS stated that they would care for the bird to stabilize it before releasing it back to the wild.

"It will be stabilised by administering IV fluids and provided proper diet, then monitored for a few days before being released back to the wild," the agency noted.

David Ndeereh, head of Veterinary Services at the KWS, announced that information on the bird would be shared with the East Africa Bird Ringing Association to obtain more details on it.

The Siaya County Government was also called upon to enhance protection of Lake Victoria catchment areas such as Lake Kanyaboli National Reserve.

KWS Director of Research Patrick Omondi explained that a number of migratory birds had been sighted in the areas in recent times.
