A police officer was on Tuesday, March 24, shot dead by armed thugs during a Standard Gauge Railway robbery incident.

According to a report by K24 TV, the gunmen were driving in a white Toyota Fielder when they committed the offence at Suswa SGR Station.

The reportedly stole the officer's AK47 rifle loaded with thirty rounds of ammunition before proceeding into the cash office where they stole an empty cash box.

Confirming the incident, Inspector Joseph Gethi, the officer in charge of SGR Station Section 9, disclosed that he heard gunshots at around 10 a.m.

When he rushed to check what was happening, he reported that he found the officer lying unconscious with a head wound.

A number of eyewitnesses told the broadcaster that the thugs were armed with pistols when they committed the offence.

The identity of the gunmen is, however, not known yet and police launched investigations into the incident.

The deceased was rushed to Olubwani Medical Clinic at Suswa where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and Railways Police Unit assessed the scene of the crime where they found three spent cartridges from a 9mm calibre pistol.

The thugs reportedly attacked the station after rumours were rife that the station was going to be closed yet there was money in the counter.

Arrests connected to the incident are yet to be made.
