Inspector-General (IG) of the National Police Service, Hillary Mutyambai received backlash on Monday, September 7, over his remarks on the reopening of bars in the country.
Mutyambai was responding to a question during his interactive session on Twitter dubbed Engage The IG on some bars still operating despite the governments directive of closing.
A Twitter user asked the IG on what action the police would take on bars in Githurai, Nairobi that he claimed were still in operation.
"All bars are supposed to remain closed until the Ministry of Health reviews the protocols in place. Immediate action will be taken," read Mutyambai's response.
His response rubbed many Kenyans the wrong way with a number questioning why bars were still ordered to remain closed when other seemingly more risky establishments and activities were allowed.
A reply to his tweet asked the difference between Covid-19 risks bars pose to the public compared to politicians holding huge rallies across the country.
The reply was accompanied by Deputy President William Ruto's photo speaking to Kenyans in Athi River, Machakos County after attending a church service on Sunday, September 6.
Esther Chepkoech urged Mutyambai to issue bars with guidelines for resumption arguing that the prolonged closure would cripple them financially.
"Isn't this wrecking down other people's businesses Mr IG? Why don't you give them guidelines on Covid-19?" she asked.
With hotels being allowed to sell alcohol under strict guidelines, one Koech Misoi urged the government to come up with a detailed directive.
"What is the clear directive on restaurants and selling of alcohol. There is lots of confusion on the same," noted Koech.
While responding to other queries on bars reopening, Mutyambai asked to be provided with specific bars that were still operating.
Sabina Joy located at Ambassador area along Moi Avenue and the Modern Green Club along Latema Road in Nairobi have been selected in a pilot program to assess the safety of bars ahead of a planned reopening.
