A number of Nairobi estates have had an upgrade in terms of infrastructure development with intervention from the county government, the national government, the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) and various youth groups.
With these projects, the city has seen an improvement in service delivery and overall quality of life of the residents.
Here are some of the projects which are estimated to cost billions of shillings undertaken so far:
Stadiums in Nairobi
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko promised to spruce up stadiums in the county. Currently undergoing construction is the Dandora Stadium in Embakasi North Constituency.
The state of the art facility which seeks to give the youth a chance to nurture their talent will have notable features like; artificial turf, seats, a gym centre, modern stalls and floodlights.
The county administration is also set to construct four other modern sports facilities in Jacaranda grounds (Embakasi East), Kihumbuini (Westlands), Woodley (Kibra) and Kariokor (Starehe).
The five Nairobi county stadiums are estimated to be upgraded at a cost of Ksh700 Million.
Road infrastructure Improvement
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has undertaken several road projects in the city. Among the roads that have been spruced up by the authority are Councillor Opundo Road in Dandora and the Buruburu Farmer's road which is a link between Kangundo Road (Chokaa) and Eastern Bypass (Mihango).
Earlier in August Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia disclosed that the government would open up 408 kilometres of access roads in a number of informal settlements in Nairobi.
The National Metropolitan Services (NMS) set up an asphalt plant on Kangundo Road which will be used to upgrade roads in all parts of Nairobi City County.
"The asphalt that you will process here will be used to make roads in Mukuru, Kibera, Mathare and in all corners of Nairobi," President Uhuru Kenyatta stated during a visit of the plant on October 9, 2020.
Nairobi County was allocated Ksh452 Million by the Kenya Road Boards for the financial year 2019/20, a conditional grant for maintenance of county roads.
Railway Transport System
Several estates are set to benefit with plans to revamp the railway system in the city as the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service (NCRS) development is expected to provide a viable traffic solution to individuals.
The project, which is part of the Nairobi Metropolitan Transport Master Plan, aims to create an efficient and affordable mass rapid transport system for the city.
Some of the estates that will be connected within existing railway corridors are Ruiru, Syokimau, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Kikuyu and Embakasi village.
New stations will be added at Buru Buru, Pipeline,Umoja, Githurai and Donholm with plans to extend commuter rail service Thika, Limuru, and Lukenya.
Kenya Railways has already acquired 11 refurbished DMUs, five coaches and spare parts from Spain at a price of Ksh1.15 billion.
Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system
The Bus Rapid Transport System (BRT) which will be connected to the commuter rail is expected to improve efficiency and reduce congestion on the roads.
The buses which already have a dedicated lane on the Thika Superhighway are expected to carry up to 100 passengers.
The BRT lane will be spread to other major roads such as the Outering Road, and is expected to cost Ksh6 billion.
Kangundo Road fire station
Nairobi City County is finalizing construction of the Kangundo road fire station that will boost its emergency response especially in Eastlands area.
The fire station is to be equipped with fire engines, ambulances, a borehole for water supply and adequate personnel to run disaster and emergency operations.
The construction of the Kagundo Road is being financed by the World Bank together with another one in Waithaka area.
The county government also plans to put up at least one fire station in all the 17 constituencies of Nairobi.
Modern Markets
The county government and the NMS have also undertaken to establish modern markets in various parts of the city.
For example the New Karandini Modern Market in Dagoretti North Sub County which is nearing completion will have ample parking space within the building and is expected to accommodate all the displaced traders, as well as sign in new tenants.
The design of the market consists of one building block with three floors.
In addition, several other markets in the city are also being constructed including Uhuru Market along Jogoo road, Mwariro Market in Starehe Constituency and the New Wakulima Market along Kangundo road.
