The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) has raised alarm over what it terms as fraudulent activities carried out by some hospitals in the country.

A report by Daily Nation indicated that NHIF, in a memo, flagged a number of hospitals located in Nyamira, Homa Bay and Migori counties for engaging and propagating fraudulent activities.

NHIF has claimed that some of the hospitals made claims on grounds that they had conducted surgeries when in real sense they had, all this in an attempt to swindle money from the institution.

The memo further noted that some of the health centers had hired quarks with no proper medical licenses.

NHIF stated that some of the hospitals engaged in fraudulent surgical procedures, while others did not attain the minimum requirements to operate as health centers.

Some of the facilities include Roman Annex Medical Centre at Kemera, Roman Medical Centre at Magombo in Nyamira County and Samjomen Hospital in Migori.

According to NHIF, Samjomen, for instance, was found "conducting several emergency caesarian sections, an indication of fraudulent activities."

In February 2020, Insurance companies had placed more private hospitals under scrutiny over inflated bills.

The Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI) began the probe countrywide after many insurance companies cut ties with hospitals after executives set daily targets.

In the past, fraudulent surgeries have been highlighted as the top form of fraud at the institution.

In 2017, NHIF invited Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives to help probe an instance in which it was losing as much as Ksh500 million monthly to fictitious claims.

The fraud emerged from a collusion between hospitals and some employees at the institution.
