Raw sewerage has been flowing into some houses in a Nairobi estate, prompting some tenants to temporarily vacate the area.

In a video posted online, some tenants of Githurai 45 were seen walking through the sludge as they tried to salvage their property which was trapped in the houses.

The residents stated that the sewerage flowed in their houses on Sunday, February 7, following a heavy downpour, escalating on Monday when the rains continued.

The residents suspect that the situation could have been caused by a broken sewer line inspection chamber that might have been tampered with when a road was being constructed in the area.

"The sewerage flowed into a nearby river following the incident," a resident stated.

In a bid to avert cases of people falling in the chamber that had been left open, the residents covered it with stones.

This made the situation worse because the outlet of the sewer water was blocked and in effect causing the sewerage water to flow into the nearby houses.

“We have a story building nearby where our children now spend most of their days on people’s verandas because they cannot play in the dirty water,” a resident stated.

"We are yet to get help on this situation," she added.

Health problems such as malnutrition, diarrhoea, cholera and typhoid fever are common, especially when water is mixed with industrial and domestic sewage effluent.
