Inspector-General of Police Hilary Mutyambai has announced new changes in the National Police Service in order to ensure efficiency in their service operations.

In the new changes, Augustine Nthumbi replaced Rashid Yakub as the Nairobi Regional Police Commander. Nthumbi previously served as the Central regional police boss. Titus Karuri, who served as the director of operations at Vigilance House, will now take over Nthumbi's previous post.

Recent reports from the Ministry of Communication indicated that Yakub had been promoted to Senior Assistant Inspector General of police (SAIG).

Nthumbi will now oversee operations in the planned referendum for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and 2022 General elections.

The new Nairobi police boss served as a General Service Unit officer in regions such as Mombasa, Kasarani, Meru and other posts. He has also served as the Uasin Gishu police commander in the year 2019.

Nthumbi has been at the forefront advocating for the rights of police officers as well as instituting for issues to be resolved within the police sector.

Recently, he made headlines when he initiated a report on the rising suicide cases among police officers. Presenting the findings to the National Police Service Commission (NPSC), Nthumbi attributed the cause to limited supervision of junior officers residing outside police camps.

"Stagnation in rank, disciplinary actions arising from desertion and inadequate monitoring of junior officers leaving outside police lines are among causes of stress in officers identified," Nthumbi stated.

Following the meeting, the commission agreed to develop and strengthen a structured communication channel, as well as enhance monitoring of police officers.

Further, they advocated for numerous counseling sessions for police officers in order to curb the rising cases of depression and deaths.

The news comes as Mutyambai promoted nearly 50 senior police officers in various ranks. Among those promoted to serve as the Commissioner of Police include Daniel Kamanda who served at the Central Fire Arms department, Samuel Mathenge (Pilot Police Airwing).

Others include Muthuri Mwongera (SCPC Kasarani), James Kimani (SCPC Kiambu East), Samuel Anampiu (County Kisumu Commander). Mutyambai noted that more changes would be announced in the coming weeks.
