President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday, April 24, ordered the police service to recruit more personnel from the National Youth Service (NYS).
While making his address during the graduation of NYS recruits in Gilgil, Nakuru, the Head of State noted that the police service had recruited 50 NYS graduates into the Directorate of Command, Control and Communication (IC3) centres in Nairobi and Mombasa, a number that deemed too low.
"Nasema hiyo haitoshi, lazima tuongeze (The number of recruits in my view is not enough. We must add more).
"Mbona mnaandika watu hamsini peke yake, hapo kuna wakenya kutoka kila kona ya nchi. Hata mkienda kuandika watu kutoka district, hawa wametoka huko pia. Mwapee kazi.
(Why are you hiring only 50 people, these are recruits from every corner of the country. When you go to hire in the districts, even these recruits are from the district, hire them)" he ordered.
The president also assured the graduands that the Government would continue securing jobs for them through the newly launched servicemen/women tracking system.
Kenyatta commended the NYS for continuing to empower Kenyan youth with skills and competencies.

He noted that the service was playing a huge role in moulding them into better citizens by inculcating the ethos of patriotism, loyalty, integrity, duty, and service to the nation.
The President further thanked the NYS personnel for their prominent contribution to national development through their involvement in projects such as the revival of the railway network, renewal of Kisumu Port, and supervision of the Kazi Mtaani youth employment initiative.
In March 2021, the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) revealed that it had paid NYS and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Ksh1.8 Billion to revamp old railway lines.
By using KDF and NYS, the government saved billions by opting not to engage a contractor which could have otherwise cost Ksh18 billion.
KDF took on more of the complex work while the NYS cleared the bushes that had obstructed the railway lines.
