Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai on Tuesday, May 4, offered psychological help to a police officer who lost her three children and a house help to a fire tragedy in Nakuru County.

In a statement, Mutyambai stated that the National Police Service (NPS) was committed to addressing the welfare of Officers and their families.

"This is a difficult and painful experience. PC Mary, it is not easy and my prayers are with you and your family. May God comfort you with peace that surpasses human understanding," Mutyambai begun.

"I therefore extend my support to ensure the officer is settled and offered the necessary psychosocial assistance," he continued.

The four, Mary Wairimu (house help) and children Leah Njoki ,Teresa Wanjiru and Mildred Aga  died in an accidental house fire on May 2, 2021.

Neighbours told the police that the house help had unsuccessfully tried to purchase electricity tokens earlier.

She then decided to use a candle that is believed to have caused the death of the four.

Neighbours were alerted when they saw smoke billowing from the building but did not know that there were people inside the house.

“We started seeing smoke but couldn’t figure out where it was coming from; by the time we realized the house was on fire, it was too late,” a neighbour stated.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko also stated that he was willing to offer a helping hand in case he was asked to.

The incident took place a month after two children were burnt to death at their home in Gakuyu village, Murang'a County, after a gas cylinder exploded inside the house.
