Update: Three Administration Police officers have been killed after their vehicle ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Banisa, Mandera County.

In the accident, three others who were in the car were injured.

The officers were on a routine border patrol when they were ambushed by al-Shabaab militants, resulting in many security officers being seriously wounded.

Five police officers have been wounded following an exchange of fire with suspected Al-Shabaab terrorists along the Mandera-Somali border.

In a statement to newsrooms on Friday, May 21, the national police service revealed that a multi-agency team of security officers was in hot pursuit of suspected militants.

"The ambush which took place at 6 a.m in Banisa during routine border patrol, has unfortunately left five of our police officers injured and they are currently receiving medical attention," Senior Assistant General of police Miriam Muli stated.

The terrorists are reported to have sustained heavy casualties in the exchange.

following the early morning attack, the National Police Service has secured the area

"We wish to assure residents of our sustained vigilant presence even as the operation to apprehended and bring the perpetrators of the crime to justice," the statement read in part.

The incident comes after a day after several Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers were injured after a car they were travelling in hit an improvised road bomb.

The officers' vehicle hit the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) while traveling from the Baure Camp in a Landcruiser to the Kenya-Somali border where construction of a wall is going on.

Following the attack, the KDF released a statement stated that they had deployed teams to man the routes so as to deny the enemy movement.

"Regrettably, three soldiers succumbed to their injuries. These soldiers paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the citizens of Kenya," KDF Spokesperson Zipporah Kioko added.

The force recognised the courage demonstrated by the soldiers during the attack and appreciated the quick response by other security teams subsequent to the incident.

The injured were airlifted to the Defence Forces Memorial Hospital in Nairobi for treatment.
