COTU secretary general Francis Atwoli and lawyer Ahmednasir Abdulahi were on Friday morning, May 28, engaged in a heated argument following the immortalisation of the former on a Nairobi road.

In a statement, the lawyer alleged that the removal of office of the COTU sec gen should be a top priority for the government that takes over power in 2022.

"The removal from office and prosecution for unexplained wealth and assets of Mr Francis Atwoli must be a top priority for any government that comes into power in August 2022. This is not negotiable," the lawyer stated.

Aggrieved by the sentiments, Atwoli responded saying that he was an honest man who had worked hard to amass the wealth that he currently has.

"My record speaks for itself. Unlike you, I am a very honest man, I work hard, I never engage in corrupt dealings, I speak my mind and I am not a billionaire (like you).

"My influence is out of the growth of the labour movement in Kenya. Kenyans with jobs are protected," Atwoli stated.

The unionist also got heat from blogger Robert Alai who indicated that a road named after Atwoli was an insult to the Kenyan worker.

Atwoli responded by saying that he would not give in to his insults.

"I will see you go down but never will you see me go down and by the way, what have you done in this life other than gaining followers on twitter and surviving on extortionism?" Atwoli posed.

On Thursday, the Nairobi County Government honoured COTU secretary general Francis Atwoli with a road named after him in the upmarket of Kileleshwa.

Nairobi Deputy Governor Ann Kananu stated that the secretary general had been recognised for his selfless contribution and for agitating the rights of the Kenyan workers in the last 54 years.

This year, Accra Road was renamed Kenneth Matiba road and Eastleigh first avenue renamed Yusuf Hajji avenue.
