Police from Kabete Police Station have launched a manhunt for a motorcycle rider who allegedly shot a passenger on Tuesday, July 27 at 10 pm in Dagoretti, Nairobi.

Samuel Mugo was allegedly shot on his knee by the rider shortly after the rider dropped him off at the wrong point.

The police stated that Mugo boarded the boda boda to drop him home to beat the curfew time as he had arrived late from work.

"He alleged that on Tuesday night at about 10 pm he hired a motorcyclist from ILRI roundabout and was to be dropped at his home along Naivasha Road," stated the police report.

Instead of dropping him at Gathondeki Triple 3 flats, the rider dropped him on Slip Road. He waited for a few minutes then followed Mugo, who was now on foot heading home.

Just as Mugo arrived at the main gate, the rider appeared before Mugo and robbed him at gunpoint. However, when Mugo attempted to resist the robbery, the rider opened fire, shooting him on his left knee.

The rider made away with a mobile phone and a bag containing books.

Mugo was rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment where he is currently recuperating.

The police are yet to confirm the type of gun that the armed robber used as they did not find any used cartridges at the crime scene.

There has been a spike in crimes committed by motorcycle riders in Nairobi with the majority of the cases being armed robberies. The riders have also been used as getaway riders by criminals to leave crime scenes.

Furthermore, armed robbers using motorcycles devised new ways to ensure that they do not get caught by the police. Some of these include using black tape to alter their number plates and covering their plates with bandanas.

On Wednesday, July 28, police in Machakos County arrested two motorcycle riders in connection with an armed bank robbery in Matuu.
