Philomena Njeri, the wife of the late Kiambu tycoon, Jonathan Mukundi Gachunga, was laid to rest on Tuesday, August 10, at her parents' home in Kianjege village in Kirinyaga County.
Gachunga and his wife were found dead on Tuesday, August 3, at their Kirigiti home in Kiambu County in an apparent murder-suicide.
Njeri's godmother, who spoke at the burial on behalf of the family, stated that Njeri's mother, Margaret Wanjiru, was overwhelmed with emotions after losing her only daughter.
The kin requested the late's friends to stand with the mother as she came to terms with her daughter's death. Wanjiru did not speak at the event that was live-streamed on social media pages.
Another family friend added that the deceased was like a daughter to her. Njeri reportedly supported the family friend during the burial of her daughter identified only as Mumbi.
"There is one thing I would like to say when I heard that Njeri is gone, I asked God, do those people who die see one another? If they do, I know, and I believe Njeri and my daughter Mumbi are together and they are happy," stated the family friend.
"Njeri has been my friend and my daughter and a good sister to my daughter Mumbi, who passed on seven months ago. When Mumbi passed on, Njeri really supported me together with her friends. I was left with two kids, Njeri is the one who always called to inquire on their whereabouts."
Her schoolmates performed one of her favourite vernacular songs as emotions ran high at the funeral.
"For those of us who knew Njeri, if things were hard or easy, she would say, 'si ni life!' (Such is life). If Njeri was here, she would have told you, 'Si ni life?" a friend who read her eulogy recalled.
An autopsy conducted by Chief Government Pathologist, Johansen Oduor, refuted reports that Njeri was pregnant when she died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The report indicated that the woman was shot four times, while her husband, businessman Jonathan Mukundi, died of a single gunshot to the head.
