The Kenyan Government, through the Foreign Affairs Ministry, on Thursday, August 19, announced that three Kenyans stuck in the volatile Asian country of Afghanistan have been rescued.

According to the ministry, they are in the process of evacuating the remaining nine Kenyans.

It also communicated to respective Kenyan Missions in Islamabad (Pakistan), Beijing (China), and Tehran (Iran), urging them to assist in the evacuation process.

"Kenya has no diplomatic presence in Afghanistan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Kenya High Commission to Islamabad, Pakistan has reached out to our allies to get information of Kenyans stranded in Afghanistan," the ministry stated.

Initially, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Macharia Kamau had requested those stranded in the war-torn region to contact their employers who would facilitate their evacuation.

“The country has been unstable for a long while and we do not expect Kenyans to have gone to this country.

"We are following up to find out if there are known Kenyans stranded through our High Commission in Pakistan,” Kamau stated in a past interview.

The Kenyan nationals are believed to be employees of international organisations operating in Afghanistan during the relatively calm US-backed regime headed by President Ashraff Ghani.

The stability, however, is gone after a sporadic organisation -Taliban - took over the government and declared Afghanistan an Islamic Emirate.

This has led to thousands attempting to flee the nation with several video clips doing rounds online of scores rushing to board a plane that was leaving Kabul, Afghanistan's capital.

The video, which depicted the severity of the situation, revealed the lengths residents and foreigners would go to in order to leave the war-torn country.
