Former Nairobi Governor, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, on Wednesday, September 15 came to the rescue of over 300 victims of Kawangware fire, barely two days after he told a court he is stone broke.
This was after a fire razed down houses in Kawangware, Gatina ward on Tuesday, September 14, leaving over 300 people to spend the night in the cold. The tragedy left one man dead and several others injured.
Sonko shared on his social media platforms a video of himself donating money, foodstuff and other personal effects to the victims of the fire.
He captioned one of them, “Assisting fire victims of Kawangware, Gatina Ward who slept out yesterday following a heavy inferno that left over 300 people homeless. We are donating foodstuff like rice, sugar, maize flour and cooking oil together with other essentials.”
Some of the other items he donated include bedding and diapers.
While addressing them, the former governor mentioned that he will support them in any way and ensure the man who died in the inferno gets a befitting send-off. He went ahead and ordered that a sick woman who was among the victims be taken to hospital immediately.
“They said I have nothing left. However, you will not sleep hungry. I am even giving you all the fare to go back home,” Sonko said.
The victims were overjoyed and thanked the former governor, expressing disappointment after no government official came to their rescue.
Some of the victims got overwhelmed by emotions and asked the former governor to vie for the position of governor again since they need him despite his impeachment.
The display of philanthropy from the former governor comes days after he filed a report in court, claiming that he is broke and not in the position to finance his children's education.
In his report, the former governor of Nairobi asked the court to give him back Ksh 15M, which he had given as bail for a graft case.
“I am asking the court to be allowed to deposit security in place of the cash bail to enable me to access the money for purposes of attending to my health, paying school fees for my young ones, pay my lawyers and cater for my daily needs and those of my family,” Sonko pleaded with the court.
