A first-year student who almost missed out on pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Medicine has finally reported to the university.

This is after lecturers from Egerton University and well-wishers came together to pay fees for Kevin Otieno, who got a call up to study Clinical Medicine at the institution.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on Wednesday, September 22, his mother, Benter Atieno, confirmed that the lecturers and other well-wishers reached out to her after Kevin's story was highlighted by the media.

She disclosed that the lecturers contributed money which they sent direct to Kevin's school account.

While other well-wishers sent her money via mobile transfer, she asked them to liaise with the school so that they would deposit the money in the school's account.

"Most of the money was sent to the account number provided by the university. I cannot state the exact figures, but all I know is that it enabled my son to join the university," she added.

Kevin reported to school on Saturday, September 18, nearly three weeks after the September 6 reporting date. He had been staying home after failing to raise Ksh47,840 school fees.

On September 21, a well-wisher called Kenyans.co.ke to inquire how she could reach the medical student.

Choosing to remain anonymous, she stated that she was touched by his story and wanted to help out.

"I wanted to pay his school fees. My boy was also called to do medicine, and I thought it would be unfair for Kevin to miss out on his course," she stated.

However, she revealed that Kevin's mother had informed her that his fees had already been settled by Egerton University staff and other well wishers.

Kevin had scored a mean grade of A of 82 points in the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2020.
